We are drifting slowly, dragging the anchors along the southern bank of the Murom cape in the Onega Lake at the east shore. The wind is 9-11 km/s; the waves are about 1.5 — 2.0 meters. We keep watches and sleep in turn. In the line of sight we can see a monastery of 14th century, but we cannot even come close to the shore. A bottom is rocky, and stones stick out of water in some places. The monastery has no berth. We don’t see if there were any monks or any other people even in the binocular. A cellular communication appears from time to time. Probably the wind “drifts” it. A radio communication is out of a reach zone too. We are in the independent sailing.

Nothing has predicted such weather, as well as the weather forecast. The 18th of June about a noon, Alexey Mjakishev went ashore to get on a train at Petrozavodsk. The night before we had a “holiday party” and the next morning we felt differently, but equally bad. Alexey was packing his belongings when a huge vessel of several thousands tons has appeared intending to moor next to us. «To repair», — said their captain on the radio: «you are not in our way; just take the yacht fore away a little, so that we don’t touch it casually…» Everything would be fine, and the dry-cargo ship would be standing next to our “gentle beauty», but the ship started being carried by the current, and the captain has decided to cast off one more line from the stern to the shore directly over our yacht.

We have a small ship but with a large mast, and, and fantail crew was going to block our way with the thick ropes. We have called the captain by radio and have decided to leave immediately. Sailors were standing with ropes in hands and waiting, while we would move away from the mooring berth. Mjakishev was packing swiftly. As a result he has forgotten some of his things, some has presented to us and he has left some of them on the yacht as he was going to come back on board.

We have got a permission to enter the Onega and a rather optimistic weather forecast. Almost whole day we were sailing. The course 54 led us to Ust’oserye. In the pilot book the waterway had been marked and we hoped to find refuge at the mouth of the river for the night. About 2 o’clock in the morning the east shore has been overcast with a dense fog, especially at that part where any closed reservoirs and the rivers could be. We went up to a depth of 3 meters to Ust’oserye (it was rather dangerously for us because the bottom was rocky), but there were no buoys, and the beacon didn’t light. The viewing distance was only about 10 meters in a fog. The searching of buoys was not successful in a white night with a dense fog. We have decided that there were not any buoys there, or that our GPS showed inexact co-ordinates as they should be at that place where we were. We have decided to lay off a new course to the Murom cape and hide behind it from a possible north wind. At about 5-00 a.m. we anchored in two hundred meters from the Svyato-Uspensky monastery. The wind was from the North, the Northwest about 3 kmps. The wave was no more then 20 centimeters. As we cooked and had dinner sailing so we decided to go to bed at once, and to go to the monastery on the dinghy in the late morning.

From the monastery we were planning to go towards the Devil’s nose cape, but the wind became strong to the noon so we started to worry that we could drift to a stone ridge that was sticking out of the water straight to the downwind. Rolling became stronger, but anchors held us, clinging to the rocks. It was impossible to go to the monastery by dinghy because of strong wind and waves. We had to look for secure mooring or go facing the wind. We went facing the wind to the Devil’s nose cape. The meeting was inhospitable on the open water. The wind gusts intensified up to 12-13 m/s, high wave was up to 2 meters in which sometimes the yacht bowed under at such an angle so that not to lay down with the lag. Everything that wasn’t fixed in a cabin — flied upside down. Because of rolling the guys felt sick a little, but the engine — albeit it worked at full capacity, almost didn’t help to move. I made the decision to go back and hide behind the monastery’s cape.
The waves beat the stern — it is a special feeling — as give a knee in the ass. Eventually, we dropped two the largest anchors and stood the yacht bow to the wind. Here we were not like on clover but much better than on open water. At least the monastery’s cape has sheltered us from the big wave and wind gusts. We arranged about watches and decided to sleep in turns.

And what is the result of the day? – We have to admit that the elements are stronger than a man — in spite of the fact that the man always wants to win.
