Bear Mountain

If the transition across the Onega Lake to the Chalet was in a storm — the transition from the Chalet to the Bear Mountain was marked by a dead calm. This amazing lake constantly gives us surprises. All the day long we were tacking a good wind though it was a contrary wind. But by the evening the wind failed at all and the Onega-lake suddenly turned into the “baked milk». The cold weather and the rain were sharply changed on a heat and a blaze of the sun. We have come up to the shore as close as possible, dropped the anchors and stood there for a night, relieving each other on watch for the precaution sake. We waited in vain, there was no wind. In the morning we had to turn on the «iron wind» and go further — to the North.

I have tried to adjust the autopilot under the engine, but it has refused to operate with the «iron wind» and constantly changed a course. Then our «one-armed navigator» (Artem Lezhepekov whose hand is still tied to this body because of the injury) sat up most of the day at the steering wheel, operating by his left hand and, thereby, showing his importance and pertinence for the all crew. We have appreciated his deed, sweltering on the deck, and the «skilful sailor» (Alexander Aksakov) has managed even to get some sleep at the foredeck where there is no noise of the engine and the wind blows a little because of  moving of the yacht.

When a two-mast yacht (mainsail and mizzen) showed up on the horizon from Medvezhyegorsk, going to the South. I called them on the radio and asked “who, where, why». The answer was simple: «We are from Petrozavodsk. We have been catching the wind for two weeks. There was no wind for a week.  Now we have turned on the engine and escaping from this awful place. The water is dirty. There are no moorings. You can cast the anchors at the beach and have a look at the damsels through binoculars, all the people of the town are swimming in that dirty water now … But we have had enough. We will go to the Devils Nose! There wind blows always!»

That there the wind blows I have realized a long time ago. I wished them good luck, and told that we were in a storm there. I think it invigorated them after sweltering weather in the North.

As always we were entering the port at night, looking through binoculars for some “wall” to moor a board, or somehow to get to the shore and didn’t take the dinghy (boat) once again.

Our first attempt to cast off was the old plant, or rather its literally rotten pier with traps and passages. As soon as we have touched with the board, the huge flock of seagulls suddenly flied up and raised incredible hue-and-cry. The entire pier has been dirtied with their dung and it stank of decaying fish horribly. The workshops and plant hangars looked empty and dilapidated.

The wall height was about three meters, and there were rotten boards over it. «The skilful sailor” was holding a rubber tire of Belarus tractor, and I have had to climb up the wall and take the ropes both fore and aft. Having taken them I started to pull the yacht along the pier, stepping on rotten planks crapped by seagulls. We have sent «One-armed navigator» to the cabin to avoid his falling overboard and crippling once more. From time to time he came to the cockpit and chuckled at us. The show was really amusing.

When we began to fix the ropes, an odd-looking watchman-security guard appeared and told us: «It is the closed plant territory that is being sold. Mooring is forbidden here!» In the beginning I wanted to tell him where to get off at three o’clock in the morning, but I thought that it would be useless, because here the security guards were even worse than seagulls that already were about to dirty all our deck. We made the decision immediately to weigh anchor and look for mooring at the port where there were three rusty cranes on the pier dating from the times of “the Siege of Eighty-eight, the Conquest of Crimea”.

There was no waterway and we had to move very slowly leading by echo sounder, any moment having a risk to run aground or run into a stone, of which there is a large quantity. But intuitively understanding that barges moor (or moored) to the tower cranes, we felt more confident.

Depths were good. We have moored quickly at the very brink of a pier where barges could not to come up (just in case). «The one-armed navigator» took out the last stock of cognac Proskovetsky (250 gramme), we drank to the Bear Mountain and immediately fell asleep.

We woke up with “stand from under!”  as we call it. There was a man with the appearance of a private cooperator dating from the time of perestroika heyday. He asked an innocent question as it seemed:

— Long time have you come, sailors?

— About three o’clock in the night, — «the Skilful sailor» answered, I was sleeping at that moment.

 — We have a toll pier, — I have heard in the dream. I got up quickly from the bunk and being only in boxer shorts came to the deck.

— And for what we should pay? —  I asked the man.

— Because of your mooring at our pier, — he answered.

 — Well, we are mooring at, so what? The water is for everybody as well as membership in the «United Russia».

— Well, yes it is, but you have to pay for the mooring! – insisted the man.

— And how much is to stay next to your broken-down pier?

— It depends on the length of the vessel. Your yacht is of 7 meters 60 centimeters. Every meter is 18 rubles per hour. It is 3500 rubles per day without VAT.

 — You must have confused me with Abramovich, He has a yacht too, but his a bit bigger, but he hardly ever moors at your pier.

— I do not confuse anything. We have counted everything, so pay.

—  I’m not going to pay anything to you, — I said firmly, — First, put the bollards on the pier, lay electricity and drinking water, and then take a fee. How many yachts moor here?

 — Well, a lot of — the man confidently answered, — Last time it was from Norway. They paid neatly (it was a year ago), but this year, they say, yachts will be more. The regatta is going to us.

— Well, let Putin’s regatta pays to you, but I won’t!

The man got out a cellar phone of the «cooperator vest» and has called to someone: «Mihalych, they revolt and refuse to pay!» … while we were listening to the story repetition about the Norwegian yacht with a married couple from Sydney, «Mihalych» has appeared in person. It was obvious that he was the boss.

I have repeated to him that we wouldn’t  pay for a piece of iron to which we have moored on principle, because, first, it is not hospitable to demand money from the poor photographers exhausted on the waves, second — it is not clear, for what we should pay, and the third – you are just engaged in extortion  …

— We will give you a receipt if pay the VAT, — the chief has reacted.

 — Well, pay not only to you, but also to Putin? — I have laughed.

— Then we’ll call the security and they will cut off your ropes! — has declared Mihalych.

I went to the cabin silently, got out the maps and began to look for the new mooring. We didn’t want to argue or to prove anything, and we had no time for that.  Besides they could easily «cut off the ropes», in spite of the fact that they could be taken to court for this. Sometimes people even are worse than seagulls though they don’t defecate on your head — but only because they can not fly.

We have got out of the harbour of the town and have found «green parking» at anchors in a small Lavas bay with a beach. Just we cast off the stormy wind has blown from the East and a thunder-storm has begun. Two bow’s anchors did not allow to blow off the yacht on sand or rocks which stuck out along the edges of the beach. We are happy. We have a free beach, and we have built «ferry landing» of the boat — from the yacht to the shore through the block. It is only in 50 meters from a sandy beach. The dinner in the cockpit without mosquitoes was remarkable. In the morning nobody awoke us and did not demand money. We do not need much for work and happiness. The nature is enough for happiness, and man — for the work.
